January  16th . 2013 – Banyan Night

February  20th. 2013 – Annual General Meeting No. 44  – Bruce Macky was installed as President. As Guest Speaker Bruce  spoke on the life and times of Miles and Beryl Smeeton.March 20th   2013  – Captain Bob Smedley (Member)  – Presented the account of an incident which eventually led to ‘An Oil Spill in Paradise’.


April 17th   2013  –  Flinders Night — Ken Messenger (Member) presented his research on the life of  Matthew Flinders, focusing on the time he spent incarcerated on Mauritius as a Prisoner in Paradise from 1803 to 1810.

  May 15th  2013  – Tim Went (Member) detailed  some of his experiences in officiating as an International Judge and Juryman at International yachting events around the World. We were also pleased to have the  company of the four trainees from the Adelaide Sailing Club and their parents who were sponsored by our Baxter & Grimshaw Trust of Australia to qualify as Training Instructors .

June 19th  2013   – Ladies Night – Cathy Branson, QC, ex Solicitor General of  S.A. and Federal Court Judge for 15 years spoke on Human Rights and a role for women in this important sphere of justice

July 17th  2013     –  Stephen Jeisman spoke on his book “Colonial  Gunboat—the story of HMCS Protector and the S.A. Naval Brigade”.

August 21st  2013  – Ken Wood (Member) talked about ‘Ernest Shackelton and the Endurance’, his presentation on Sir Ernest Shackleton’s epic adventures in the Antarctic was certainly  a good night.   For those wishing to learn more about this expedition, Shackleton’s book “South” is a fantastic read. Sir Edmund Hillary once wrote “For scientific discovery , give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel, give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton”.

September 18th 2013   – Professor John West-Sooby talked on the  little known French explorers who performed early navigation feats along the Southern Australian coasts. This prompted many questions and few realized just how close we were to becoming a French colony .

November 20th  2013  –Dr. Richard Salter — “Aspects of Timor”  an account of Richard’s voluntary dental work amongst the tensions and tribalism of the people in the very poor country of East Timor – the world’s newest nation .

December 6th  2013     – Ladies Night – Doug Kneebone’s Night of Mystery Objects & Quiz, plus the usual exciting auction of numerous donated nautical items .             Return to Library Page
