History Essay Competition 2015

In the spirit to commemorate the WW1 centenary and the Baxter & Grimshaw Trust’s purpose to support nautical training for needy young people, the trustees sponsored a history competition in collaboration with the History Teachers’ Association of South Australia.  Mr Malcolm Massie, Vice-President, HTASA, provided invaluable support and encouragement for the Competition.

The following invitation and poster was sent to eligible schools.

Invitations were  sent to History Teachers in DECD Category 1 – 4 secondary schools:

“Trustees of the Baxter & Grimshaw Trust, based in Adelaide, are pleased to invite your Year 9 students to enter a competition to commemorate the centenary of World War 1. The contest encourages students to research and remember, with respect, those involved in sea service, 1914 – 1918.   In line with the foundation principles of the Trust, the contest is only open to schools on Category 1 – 4 of the DECD Index of Educational Disadvantage. Please note that the contest dovetails nicely with the Australian Curriculum for Year 9 History.  This is an exciting opportunity for your students to become involved in a task which embodies curriculum relevance, historical significance and substantial prize money.”

  • Prizes: First Prize $1,000, Second Prize $500, Third Prize $250
  • Theme: A research-based depiction of the experiences of an Australian individual or group involved directly in sea service during World War 1.
